I’ve been looking for a long time to replace my aging digital camera, and the Nikon Coolpix P100 fit the bill perfectly. My only complaint so far is the rather stupid battery level indicator: when it comes on you’re almost out of battery! No early warning, no way of checking your actual battery level at any time. My older camera included a battery meter icon that was divided in several bars, so you could actually estimate pretty well the remaining battery charge at any time by just counting the number of bars shown on the battery icon. Not so with the P100: as per page 26 of the manual if the battery icon is OFF your battery is still OK (it actually states “Battery Fully Charged”). Once the icon appears it means “Battery level LOW, prepare to charge or replace the battery”. So this basically allows a situation in which the battery level might be slightly above the warning threshold, so you might actually think you are still good to go, when in reality you’re almost out of battery. I presume the Lithium battery used in this camera is of the “intelligent” kind, so implementing a better battery charge meter should have been very easy in terms of the ability to accurately read the battery status. My 8+ year old Sony camera does that.

This is my first Nikon camera, so unless this type indicator style has been the norm, frankly I can’t understand why Nikon would implement such a useless battery level indicator. Granted I would never leave without a spare battery, and from experience with my earlier camera, your battery charge will invariably always be exhausted when it is needed the most, so I always had a second battery on hand. But this is beyond the point of this discussion.

My opinion of the very least battery charge meter resolution I could live with in this camera:

No battery icon shown: Battery between 100-50% charged.
Battery icon shown steady: Battery charge between 50-10%.
Battery icon flashing: less then 10% charge remaining.

So Nikon, the Coolpix P100 is undoubtedly a great camera, but perhaps you could fix the flimsy battery level indicator with a Firmware download/upgrade and that can be performed from the end user side. Mine has v1.0 so I hope something will be done to correct this mistake. This model being brand new, hopefully as more people buy it and also realize this small but significant shortcoming, more complaints will be heard and hopefully something will be done about it. If anybody else agrees with me, please also write a review about it. And if the Firmware upgrade becomes available, please let me know.

Canon PowerShot SD780IS 12.1 MP Digital Camera with 3x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom and 2.5-inch LCD (Deep Red) Review

Bought this as an supplement to Canon SLR, for portability reasons. Size is a real plus for this. Photo quality is good.
I would recommend reading and viewing photos in the reviews made by specialists on the web, it’s all there.

I am very disappointed with the way Amazon offers a bonus SD card for this purchase (and others too). On the product page it says you get a bonus 4gb card, but you really don’t get this unless you add the card to the basket. I realized this after the order was shipped (some of you are laughing right now). It’s a dirty sales trick from Amazon, but what’s not dirty when it comes to sales? Next time I’ll know this, but who knows what else they’ll come up with.

Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ35 12.1MP Digital Camera with 18x POWER Optical Image Stabilized Zoom and 2.7 inch LCD Review

Overall I’m really enjoying this camera!

Things I like in particular:
-Build quality: very light but solid, very nice doors for the battery, memory card, etc
-Good to hold
-Layout of controls and menus let’s me set up manual shots quite quickly
-Very nice quality photos
-Really good image stabilization
-Fast focus, including in low light
-Impressive wide to tele lens range, zoom control is good
-Some of the many preset modes are useful to me, such as high speed burst, HDR, probably some others once I try them. Usually I ignore these things.
-Switch for toggling between recording and viewing – much better than turning the dial
-On/off switch instead of a button. Feels very satisfying somehow!
-Assignable function button

What could be better:
-Images seem noisy if I look too closely, even at low ISO – probably just fine for printing which I haven’t done yet. Then again my previous camera (Sony DSC-H1) had too much noise supression.
-Maybe too many preset modes
-I find the auto mode tends to consistently overexpose, at least outside in the sun
-Probably too many megapixels crammed onto the sensor, creating noise – 10mp would probably have gotten better results overall
-HD video could be smoother
-AVCHD lite video format keeps file sizes small but is not very well supported, but at least the option for heavy mpeg recording is there
-Normal (full-quality) burst mode only takes three shots, and not particularly fast. High speed burst mode is low quality

The FZ35 records HD movies with 1280 x 720-pixel resolution. It uses the AVCHD Lite format to achieve higher image quality while storing less data than the conventional Motion JPEG. Plus, the FZ35 is equipped with an HDMI output terminal for direct transmission of digital image and sound signals.

Pentax Optio W90 12.1 MP Waterproof Digital Camera with 5x Wide Angle Zoom and 2.7-Inch LCD (Black) Review

This camera offers a lot of features for the price. I bought it to go with an earlier model of the same camera, Optio W20, that offered a lot less of the “surprise and delight” kind of wizbang stuff this new model now offers. I use it on a boat and wanted it for it’s waterproof qualities and general toughness along with its multiple features.

The still photos are excellent resolution. The multiple face capture features and the joining of two and three photos together for super wide photos is pretty neat.

It even takes pretty good movies….although the auto focus doesn’t seem to work on the zoom in the movie mode. Maybe it is something I’m doing wrong. But that is the only beef I have with it.

I’m happy with it. Great technological stuff in a small tough package.

I love this camera…This is my first time to buy a canon product. And I’m loving it.. THough I am still learning how to use the special features of the camera for a certain occassion..I love the portability..But there’s some negative about this camera.I got 2 kids thats always on the move & I want to take their pictures when they’re having fun playing w/o noticing me taking those shots, even if I use the kids & pet mode but w/o flash, the pictures were blurry, really blurry…So I have to use the flash even we’re in indoor location..Most of the times I used flash because pictures were blurry unless you used a tripod..On the other hand, the MACRO mode is great. I love that the background is blurry but the main subject is very clear & crisp..Moreover, the video is really really great.. No unneccessary noise in the background, video is in HD. Love it..

All in all, this camera is perfect for just point & shoot, an all day handy, ready to go everyday camera…Don’t keep turning it on just to look at the pictures on the screen, it will drain the battery fast. And makes the camera hot..And I am still in the process of exploring how to use this caera efficiently & how to take great great great pictures of my kids..
