Garmin nüvi 660 4.3-Inch Bluetooth Portable GPS Naviagtor (Refurbished) Review

I originally got this garmin for my wife to learn the way around San Antonio. We are coming from a small town area. I am very happy with the Garmin, especially after learning the Bluetooth capability. It is awkward when your GPS rings while in a restraunt, but you can figure it out prett easy. It is accurate on all the street names in this area.

The only vise I have, which I am still learning, is how it selects its route. I looked through it and it was set for fastest route, but the route it takes me is flooded with traffic lights. I have updated it, but it still takes me on some odd routes, for example. Texas is known for it’s service/ access roads and turn arounds. Well, say I am on I-410 and know that I have to get off in 5 exits, for some reason the GPS will put me on the access road, that is usually set up with a traffic lights at every intersection. I don’t know why it does that versus leaving me on the 410 and letting me of at the actual named exit.

Other than that, I am happy with the product and hope my wife will start using it instead of me driving everywhere.

Garmin Streetpilot C550 2.1-Inch Bluetooth Portable GPS Navigator Review

Had this less than a year and it is very helpful when you go place’s you’ve never been to before. You can search for places to eat and see in an area your not familiar with. It seems to always get me to where I want to go. I like the built in speaker and antenna.
Only thing I don’t like is that mine already needs updating after less than a year. When on a newer road My little truck icon is out in no mans land, and the unit keeps trying to get me back on a known road. The maps are updatable (not free) and not sure what “Extras” are but they can also be downloaded.
Mine is set on “fastest route” and I know from testing on my home roads that it does not always know the fastet route. This makes me question it when I’m out of town.
I’ll use my Android smart phone from now on. Smartphones have nearly made car GPS unit’s obsolete. Only thing is the GPS units work when the cell phones don’t have a signal.

Cheap ! Garmin nüvi 265W 4.3-Inch Widescreen Bluetooth Portable GPS Navigator (without Traffic)

Garmin nüvi 265W 4.3-Inch Widescreen Bluetooth Portable GPS Navigator (without Traffic) Review

We recently got this GPS because a sudden and difficult trip demanded we have one, and we could not find the power cord for our current one, a Nokia. It was easy to say we’d eventually find that power cord, but wouldn’t it be nice to have one GPS for each car?

So having had the dinky Nokia, I have some basis for comparison. The Garmin is far superior in two ways- it is fast to find the satellite signal, and the maps it came with were good and current. It is a little more helpful too – it tells you which side of the road your destination is on so if you’re in an unfamiliar area you know where to look. Less important, but additionally, the voices are much better than our old Nokia, less robotic, and less likely to muddle up a complex street name. The Garmin was also easy to use right out of the box. It gives you sufficient heads-up time on turns and exits and advises you on where they will be, left or right. But…

There are a few things about this unit that I find highly annoying. On start up, the screen displays an irritating legal disclaimer saying you shouldn’t diddle with it while driving as it is unsafe, and you take responsibility for anything that might happen when you use it. I’d be ok with this if it happened the first time I used it, but it happens every time you turn it on.

Another issue is that it just plumb drops the signal. Yes, it is fast to find it when you’re starting out on a trip, but it doesn’t seem to hold that signal. I was on a test run in a suburban area where there was presumably little interference when it made this noise I’d not yet heard, but knew meant bad things, and looked down to see it admitting it had lost the signal. The Nokia had never done this. The Garmin was purchased to help get me to a remote location in the middle of nowhere, and this incident was not confidence building. It did, in fact, lose signal several times during my mountainous trip to God’s country. Worse yet is that when it loses the signal, you have to hit “OK” on the screen to unlock the warning for it to proceed again. You’re moving, so you just want it to get on with re-finding the signal, it shouldn’t have to ask permission! What was that about not diddling with it while driving?

I’ve also found that it picks some bizarre routes. Using it around town to get used to it, I found it was choosing streets that would indeed work, but there were other streets more major that it might have better selected.

One of its worst “habits” is its inability to differentiate direction when you are moving in a small area, like if you have to do a turn-around, or are in a gas station on a corner, re-entering traffic and it “thinks” you’re on the road perpendicular to the one you are on. It doesn’t know where you are til you’re moving some distance, and sometimes that distance is more than you’d like. I have exited just such a corner gas station and been urging it “Come on, come on, you can do it” while the screen view is spinning around cluelessly and it’s showing an inaccurate picture while giving directions that don’t suit where you are. I understand that satellites are far away and to expect pinpoint accuracy is unrealistic, but if the device doesn’t “know”, it shouldn’t “act” like it does, spouting off directions that do not apply to your location. (Equally goofily, the Nokia’s default position when it didn’t know what was up was to randomly tell you to “Make a U turn” – it was senseless but consistent so you knew it was just buying time til it figured things out.)

I’m detailing these complaints because only you know what matters to you. Every GPS has its quirks that can get on your nerves. Overall, this one’s easy to learn and gets you where you’re going with some burps on the way. The lingering negative? The Nokia was about half the price and despite my hopes, the Garmin is not twice as good.

Garmin nüvi 265W 4.3-Inch Widescreen Bluetooth Portable GPS Navigator (without Traffic) Feature

  • Bright 4.3″ widescreen display.
  • Sleek, ultra-thin design fits easilty in pocket.
  • Supports Bluetooth wireless technology for hands-free calling when paired with Bluetooth-enabled phones.
  • Preloaded with City Navigator NT for North America.

Garmin nüvi 265W 4.3-Inch Widescreen Bluetooth Portable GPS Navigator (without Traffic) Overview

Garmin’s nüvi 265W offers Bluetooth compatibilty as well as predictive technology that provides faster satellite lock, a redesigned screen with more information, terrain maps, and an exciting new photo navigation feature. The 265W provides complete maps for North America and the handy Text-to-Speech feature, so you get turn-by-turn spoken directions with the real names of streets (e.g. “turn left in 50 feet at Nebraska Way”, rather than merely “turn left in 50 feet”).

The nüvi 2×5 models all sport the slim design that Garmin introduced with the 200-series last year, so they all fit comfortably in your pocket or purse, and a rechargeable lithium-ion battery that makes them convenient for navigation by car or foot. All of the models include useful travel tools like a JPEG picture viewer, world travel clock with time zones, currency converter, measurement converter, calculator and more. The 265W also offers a wide 4.3-inch (diagonal) screen that displays 70% more of the road around you.

Important Product Information: This device features a “screen lock” feature. This is a standard feature on all nüvi 2×5 and 7×5 Garmin units. If you slide the “Power” key to the right, it will lock the screen and prevent any accidental touches. Once the screen lock feature is engaged, the screen will go black/gray after about 15 seconds to save power on the device. To unlock the screen, just slide the “Power” key to the center position. This feature is really targeted for “Pedestrian” mode so that a user can put the device in his or her pocket/purse and quickly unlock the screen instead of powering on/off continuously. For more information, see page 5 of the product manual.

Hands-free Calling
In more and more places, it is becoming illegal to use cell phones while driving without a hands-free kit. WIth Bluetooth capability, microphone and speaker, you can match your nüvi to any Bluetooth-capable phone to make hands-free mobile phone calls. Simply dial the phone number with the nüvi’s touch screen keypad to make a call on a compatible phone. To answer an incoming call, just tap the screen and speak into the built-in microphone. Making and taking calls on the road has never been easier, or safer. In addition, Garmin makes it a breeze to look-up and dial numbers from your personalized phone book or even tap into your cell phone’s call history log.

FM Traffic
With an optional receiver, you can get alerts from TMC Clear Channel about traffic tie-ups and road construction that might lie ahead on your route. All you have to do is simply touch the screen to view traffic details and you’ll be ready to detour around any problem area. And if you end up missing a turn, or you’re forced into a detour that is not relayed through the traffic receiver, the nüvi’s sophisticated automatic routing will get you back on track in no time.
In most areas, TMC Clear Channel traffic broadcasts are continuous — there’s no waiting for scheduled traffic news updates or random alerts. Because traffic broadcasts are received via a “silent” FM data channel, you can still listen to music or news programming on your car radio without interference from incoming FM traffic data transmissions.

Widescreen
See More of What’s Around The super-bright, 4.3-inch (diagonal) touchscreen display gives is anti-glare for ease of viewing during the day and automatically changes its color profile for easy viewing at night or in dim light. It offers 2d or 3D perspective views.

The widescreen format gives you 70% more actual screen area than a 3.5-inch screen. Primarily this translates into a better view of the area through which you are driving. This is especially useful in showing you what parks, restaurants, ATM, gas stations, etc. are nearby, or in letting you know whether a detour is a good idea. Also, the device itself is larger, meaning controls on the screen are more widely spaced and somewhat easier to push.

Garmin nüvi 3790T 4.3-Inch Bluetooth Portable GPS Navigator Review

I’ve had it a week and so far so good. The voice recognition works better for my wife than it does for me. I don’t know if it has trouble with deeper voices. My wife can speak in normal tones and it works nearly every time. I have to turn down the AC and anything thing else that makes noise but it still hesitates on my voice. It is still a great feature. The antennae sensitivity is very good. I like the lane guidance feature. I didn’t think it had it at first but I later noticed it in the top left corner. I’m also glad that you can get your coordinates (The 670 I had before was a pain to get your coordinates). It would be nice to have a case for it. It looks very much like an Ipod Touch and is very thin. I haven’t seen the popup ads while driving. I did see one for Red Lobster but it was only once and while parked and it wasn’t on the main navigation screen. It would be perfect if it had an MP3 player and FM transmitter like my 670 had. Two thumbs up on this one.

Garmin nüvi 265W 4.3-Inch Widescreen Bluetooth Portable GPS Navigator (without Traffic) Review

My first Garmin was the smaller version of this unit, the newer one with the large screen made using it simple. I’ve had very good use from the first unit, having upgraded the map twice since I purchased it. The first one I gave to my son, still working after about 5 years of constant use.

The setup on these units is very easy, and I like the fact that you can program several routes (to go to) before hand and then just select where you want to go.

Before I got the second one I made a decision to go with a different brand, I still have that one, but I am not satisfied with the operation. It will show the map display while driving but then it will default to a demo mode, and stay in demo mode until you select the map display again. This turned out to be such a hassle that I went ahead and purchased another Garmin.

The demo mode, I eventually got tired of it by having to call the factory so that they could give me the “secret” recipe on how to get rid of it. Avoid the headaches and go with Garmin……..you can’t go wrong.

I was especially pleased getting the Garmin two days after ordering it from Amazon – Super Service!!!!

This is especially useful in showing you what parks, restaurants, ATM, gas stations, etc. are nearby, or in letting you know whether a detour is a good idea. Also, the device itself is larger, meaning controls on the screen are more widely spaced and somewhat easier to push.

Cheap ! Garmin nüvi 765/765T 4.3-Inch Widescreen Bluetooth Portable GPS Navigator (Factory Refurbished)

Garmin nüvi 765/765T 4.3-Inch Widescreen Bluetooth Portable GPS Navigator (Factory Refurbished) Review

This is a truly awesome GPS. Definitely one of garmins best in the entire lineup. When this GPS was released; soon after there was a Firmware update 3.90 that really messed this unit up and it has been going on for a loooooong time. Up until recently,Garmin FInally posted a firmware update. This has fixed the sporadic screen, the random reboots, stuttering with the voices among other things. out of their whole line up this is one of the most feature packed ones garmin offers- It has bluetooth, MP3 playback with an Aux jack, 3d maps among other things.

Garmin has released more units but they keep stripping features on all of their models. The only major difference is the google integration on the 1690/ bigger scree on the 1490 and faster hard ware on the new 3700 series which is extremely overpriced. The 765t was one of the last garmins to come out that has the capability to accept mp3s via an sd card and connect it using an AUX cable to your car. It also has 4g of internal memory. Garmin has gone cheap with alot of their models and has been using 2gb

I was honestly about to return this unit since the FW 3.90 was so bad it literally made this unit unusable (i was going to send back to Amex for refund), but thankfully this update was finally released. If you are on the fence to get one, NOW is the time to finally get it since thew price is at an all time low under~200 Just make sure you update the firmware immediately. Time will tell how reliable this unit will be with the FW, but upon my testing, it has been rock solid so far.

If you have been reading other reviews, please keep this in mind. alot of those units had FW3.90 and there was nothing you could do about it. FW4.0 has finally fixed out all those issues and this gps can now be as awesome as it was meant to originally be.

Garmin nüvi 765/765T 4.3-Inch Widescreen Bluetooth Portable GPS Navigator (Factory Refurbished) Overview

This is a refurbished GPS. Refurbished generally means that the unit has been returned to the manufacturer, who brings the navigator back to like new conditions. Some GPS may contain cosmetic blemishes.

Garmin continues to build up its nüvi 7xx series portable GPS navigators with its nüvi 765T, which adds a number of handy routing and communication features to an already impressive list of specs, including a 4.3-inch widescreen display, text-to-speech capabilities, media player, and FM transmitter for transmitting audio–including directions and MP3 music and audiobooks–from the device to your car radio.

Garmin’s nüvis pack top of the line features into a slim form factor..

New to the nüvi 7×5 lineup is Garmin’s HotFix satellite prediction (which locates your position quickly and precisely), Lane Assist (which provides lane guidance and junction views when possible), automatic time zone transitioning, and 3D Building views as well as Garmin Connect Photos to help you visually ascertain your position. Additionally, the nüvi 765T includes Bluetooth connectivity to your cell phone and free real-time traffic updates from Navteq (for the life of the device) via the included GTM 20 traffic receiver.

The Garmin nüvi 7×5 Series
  • nüvi 755T: North American maps, GTM 20 traffic receiver with lifetime traffic
  • nüvi 765T: Adds Bluetooth handsfree communication; includes GTM 20 receiver, lifetime traffic
  • nüvi 775T: Pre-loaded European and North American maps; includes GTM 20 receiver, lifetime traffic, Bluetooth
  • nüvi 785T: Adds enhanced MSN Direct traffic receiver; includes North American maps and Bluetooth

As with all nüvis, you get Garmin reliability, the fast satellite lock of an integrated high-sensitivity receiver, a slim, pocket-sized design with a gorgeous display, an easy, intuitive interface, and detailed NAVTEQ maps for North America (United States, Canada and Puerto Rico) with more than 6 million name-searchable points of interest. The Garmin nüvi 7×5 line features three other models–check out their spec highlights at the right and click here to see a quick, simple comparison of features for all Garmin nüvi GPS navigators.

The bright, 4.3-inch touchscreen display gives is anti-glare for ease of viewing during the day and automatically changes its color profile for easy viewing at night or in dim light. It offers 2d or 3D perspective views. The widescreen format gives you 70 percent more actual screen area than a 3.5-inch screen.

The nüvi 765T comes preloaded with highly detailed City Navigator NT road maps from Navteq for the entire United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico. This map database features nearly six million points of interest (POIs), including hotels, restaurants, gas stations, ATMs, and attractions. Garmin’s interface is a key to their success and one of the things that makes their devices such a pleasure to use. Simple controls and sub-screens make it easy to enter or search for destinations and get data about your trip.

Garmin’s patent pending theft prevention system that disables the unit from performing any functions until the user types in a specific 4-digit PIN or takes the unit to a predetermined secure location.

With Lane Guidance, the nüvi alerts you to which lane you need to be in for upcoming turns. In the image above, the three middle lanes of this seven-lane highway are highlighted.

With Junction View, you’ll get photo-realistic 3D views upcoming turns with signage–signs not needed for navigation are faded.

Lane Guidance
With the new Lane Guidance feature built into the nüvi 7×5 series, you’ll never question which lane you should be driving in again. It provides you with a view of what lane you should be in for upcoming turns. And with the 3D Lane Assist Junction View, you’ll be able to see a photo-realistic screen that shows you both the road detail as well as the signs as you will see them on the road. The signs that aren’t needed for navigation are faded compared to the appropriate lane signage.

Integrated Traffic Receiver
Steer clear of traffic with an integrated GTM 20 FM traffic receiver designed to receive alerts about traffic tie-ups and road construction that might lie ahead on your route. No subscriptions or additional hardware needed. Just open the box, turn it on, and get instant access to traffic information–the traffic updates are free for the life of the device.

Watch informational video

In most areas, the traffic broadcasts are continuous–there’s no waiting for scheduled traffic news updates or random alerts. Because traffic broadcasts are received via a “silent” FM data channel, you can still listen to music or news programming on your car radio without interference from incoming FM traffic data transmissions.

HotFix Satellite Prediciton
Garmin’s HotFix capability automatically calculates and stores satellite locations, greatly reducing satellite acquisition time so that you can turn the unit on and get going. With HotFix, your nüvi remembers the position of all satellites it is tracking when you turn it off, and calculates their movements in order to predict where they should be the next time you turn it on. HotFix can predict satellite positions for up to 3 days after the device was last turned off.

Multi-Destination Routing
This lets you enter several spots into the device (day care – supermarket-cleaners – office – day care, for example) and it will plot the fastest route. And once you’ve found the best router, the “Route Planning” feature lets you save up to 10 different routes, Garmin touts the feature for providing, “the most efficient route for errands, deliveries and sales calls.” The feature also makes this an instant essential accessory for anyone who shops garage sales (you know what we’re talking about). A trip log provides an electronic bread crumb trail of up to 10,000 points, so you can see where you’ve been on the map.

Where Am I? Where’s My Car?
The nüvi 7×5 series is the first to answer two common questions: “Where am I?” and “Where’s my car?” At any time, with a single tap of the screen, drivers can display their exact latitude and longitude coordinates, the nearest address and intersection, and the closest hospitals, police stations and gas stations. And to help drivers find their car in an unfamiliar spot or vast parking lot, all nüvi 7x5s automatically mark the position in which they were last removed from the mount.

Navigate by Photo with Garmin Connect Photos

Using Garmin’s Connect Photos Web site, you can choose from millions of geo-located photos provided by Google’s Panoramio photo sharing community and download them to the nüvi for a richer navigation experience using pictures as a guide.

  • The 3D Buildings feature is able to reference the buildings displayed on the map as well. Some buildings will be grey images “extruded” from the map, other buildings will be life like representations of the actual property.
  • With Automatic Time Zone Transition, you’ll never have to remember to set the time as you travel. When the unit acquires a position fix, it automatically sets the unit to the correct time zone.
  • MP3 player compatible with audiobook playback
  • JPEG picture viewer
  • FM transmitter plays voice prompts, MP3s, audio books, and more, directly through your vehicle’s stereo system
  • Compatible with optional content plug-ins available via SD card, such as the Garmin Travel Guides and Garmin SaversGuide, which provide detailed data for attractions and information on nearby merchants offering discounts.
  • Add custom points of interest (POIs) from third parties such as school zones and safety cameras
